Huge palls of white, then blackish smoke on start up (which takes some time to do now). Once started the problem goes away pretty much. starts first time and every time for the rest of the day, then Groundhog Day again, if left for 2/3 hours standing then its a little difficult once again, but never as bad as overnight/morning start up. I haven't noticed a great loss of power. Just this awful start up and smoking situation? Particularly worse , it seems, when wet or cold days. This is a Shogun, Pajero, Auto, 2.8 D, exceed, 1994 I believe, LWB, imported 1997. 175K, KM. Any advice please.

Could be many things , head gasket , injectors over fuelling , compressions low , excessive engine wear , turbo , EGR valve etc. etc. Carry out if possible a diagnostic scan for fault codes

Thanks for this, yes my service garage diagnostics only go back to 1999, so I need to get this on a diagnostic trace somewhere else.
