Possibly crankshaft sensor ?? Also came across this on another site but can't vouch for it.

Hi i have an 02 plate mitsubishi l200 2.5td It will only start if the alternator is disconnected is this a common alternator fault or wiring fault?

Hi

That makes some sense as if the MAF sensor is faulty potentially the ECU may think that its seeing too much air and will be trying to compensate.

a rough method of confirming the MAF meter is at fault is to unplug it as this will force the ECU into recognising its faulty and then use other sensors to run the engine .

also check the wiring and plug of the MAF meter for broken cracked wires or recessed pins in the plug.

also worth cleaning the sensor element of the meter by spraying with some brake cleaner - do NOT touch the elements with anything
