2014 l200, timing belt and water pump changed professionally now spewing out black smoke and really noisy under load. Taken back to garage, had inlet manifold taken off and cleaned, EGR blocked off, turbo checked and full service. No loss of power but was found oil in, so compression checked and that's fine. Excessive fuel consumption too. Any help would be great as hitting a brick wall. Mechanic advised either new DPF system or new engine.

Why was the belt and water pump replaced ? If it was o.k prior to belt being replaced and the other work and faults showed immediately after , must have been something they did ? Might be advisable if that is the case to get another opinion and the work carried out checked by another garage .

Has the timing belt been checked to see if correctly set up ?

Hi, thanks fir replies. Took motor for timing belt change as was told needed doing due to milage. Took to l200 specialist to check out and advised timing is spot on. Its the l200 specialist who have advised I need new EGR and fir it to be cleaned (inlet manifold etc old de coke). They gave me 3 options, new engine, new Egr and DPF or take back as is as they can't find the issue or give a reason for the oil or over use of fuel never mind the black smoke and loundness under load (which comes and goes). Sorry for long reply, just at the end of my patience when a simple change has caused such a big difference to the motor.

Cant get my head round why they cant find the cause especially if they are l200 specialists . You were right to get belt changed if due but from what you say , all your problems stem from this work being done . VERY strange . I sympathise with the position you now find yourself in but crazy to spend more money with them getting new EGR and DPF when they can't find the issue or give a reason for the oil or over use of fuel never mind the black smoke and loudness under load or give assurances that doing so will fix it .

Hi Cally, did you ever get to the bottom of the issue? I’ve bought an L200 and it has the same issues as you described with yours.

So, I picked the motor up a week ago. Had new EGR, turbo tested, compression tested and other stuff. No change at all. Told they could not work out the issue. I'm now awaiting the log book come back as taken my number plate off and selling it with full info of issues. Cant put more money in to it when they can't work out what's wrong. Other option would be diesel engine specialist. To be honest, I've just had enough so it going.

Wise decision when no solution forthcoming , could end up a money pit and never resolved
