in morning when i start car (after waiting for heater light to go out) it runs really rough and loud if i leave it running for 5 min then turn off and restart it will most of the time run fine and smooth and will be ok all day. but if I drive it straight away while its running rough the engine light comes on and will only go out after driving for a few mins and then only after i have restarted car.some days this problem doesnt happen but it seems to be getting more and more frequent

Have you checked the oil level is ok. When was it last serviced.

In a way your lucky.
nice steady predictable fault.
So book it in to a garage so next morning they can scan it for codes then start it while reading live data to isolate the fault.
And from your description it's getting progressively worse.
So sooner rather than later.
It's possibly just a faulty glow plug but that wouldn't light the EML.
