Mitsubishi L200 steering judder over 50 mph

Car: Mitsubishi L200
Variant: 2.5td
Model Year: 2004
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
My probem is this,at any speed over 50mph, the steering on my mitsubishi l200 becomes more and more unstable, the steering wheel shakes from side to side, even the gear lever does the same, the wheels have been re-balanced but no improvement. It has been suggested that the steering box needs replacing,at a big expense. Any ideas if anything else could be to blame?
