A wiring or ground / earth fault can sometimes cause this .

" it may be shorting round the back of the clock..would that be it do you think?" Never heard of that before , Have they checked the alternator is charging o.k ? Is the alternator a reconditioned unit as opposed to OEM ?

Yes brand new he thought that the battery was overcharging because of the alternator so he changed it..problem is it's intermittent so every time it's in of course it's not doing it..sods law!

No disrespect to your mechanic but " he thought that the battery was overcharging because of the alternator " He should have carried out a simple 2 minute load test on both battery and alternator to confirm or not rather than guessing . Check battery terminals , earth to engine , earth from engine / gearbox to chassis / body .

Is there anything I could tell him to check?

You should not have to diagnose the problem , down to him . Is it not maybe a good idea to get a second opinion from another garage / mechanic ?

I've tried 3 now..no one knows or can fix it! He said bring it whilst it's doing it but that's the point..it doesn't do it all the time but when it does it can go on for ages or not at all..frustrating

You could suggest to your mechanic who fitted the alternator that it may be faulty and to replace it under warranty .Especially as you paid for an alternator and battery he replaced that was not the fault .
