MG ZR engine revs irratically

Car: MG ZR
Variant: 1.4 105
Model Year: 2003
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
It should idle just under 1000rpm and sometimes it does but recently it is idling at around 2000rpm. Also when your driving and put your foot on the clutch to change gear, the revs remain at where they were instead of dropping. It you put it in neutral after being at say 4000rpm it will just rev there (at best it will fall very slowly back to about 2000rpm. I thought it maybe either the throttle cable or the butterfly in the throttle casing that controls air intake but it is neither! I'm stumped especially as sometimes you can turn it on and it runs perfectly! Has anyone hads a similar problem or any ideas??? Thanks, Cas

You either have a realy bad air leak or quite common on those engine is a faulty idle air control valve, check all your hoses and pipes for splits, leaks etc.

Cheers for the reply. I thought it may be a split hose or something like that but I cant see anything obvious. This Idle air control valve sounds promising as the fact it sometimes runs perfectly kind of rules out an air leak. Do you know where the valve is located on the K series?
