The automatic gearbox on this car when coming to a halt appears to be undecided as to which gear to be in.
i.e: first or second gear and appears to
shudder slightly.

Requires workshop diagnostic with main dealer

As above , better take it to dealership .Most Mercs have an adaptive transmission that adjusts to the way you drive (if all working properly).There is a procedure to retrain it to shift at certain speeds .
