Mercedes Benz A Class clunking sound from front nearside.

Car: Mercedes Benz A Class
Variant: a140
Model Year: 2003
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
Clinking sound on front nearside when driving over bumps , pot holes, etc. Also when ignition turned on there is a quiet whirring sound followed by a soft thud/clunk. Eminating from the dashboard area. This goes on for about 40 seconds to 1 minute, then stops. When the reciculation button is pressed the noise appears again for the same time. It's as though there is a motor slipping on it's linkage.I really don't want to take the dash appart. But if i have too then so be it. Boo Hoo. Help it's all driving me or should i say the missus nuts and therefore me nuts. The world cup is nearing i need her to fetch my beers or let me go the pub!!!!.
