when i start my car after being left overnight it smokes really bad,its burning about 1'lt of oil a month.the smoke burns off after about a 1/4 of a mile.....valve stem oil seals????? if so what would be a reasonable price for a mechanic to charge.also the near side hand brake cable is not pulling the calliper, there is no haynes manual for this car so i am unable to fix this probblem, both rear calliper cables are routed above the exhaust pipe and heat shield so i found it impossable to get to.can anybody help....cheers...russ.

quite possible valve stem oil seals are leaking, prob looking at a few hours labour and price of parts, check handbrake lever on rear caliper is`nt siezed as quite common, free off with wd40 and check cable is`nt siezed, free up

Normally if the valve guides or seals are gone you get blue smoke every time the car has idled for a short time and then revved up . Like the example of sitting at lights , then pulling away . It also tends to get worse as engine warms up to normal running temp .

I have the same smoke problem and occured immediately after a service. Was given valve oil seals as the problem and quoted just under £1000! On start up, my car idles at 2000rpm, so immediately after starting up, I put it in first gear and let the clutch out to lower the revs to around 1200rpm (remembering to keep the brake on) for about 30 seconds. Blueish smoke only seems to come out at a normal rate for about 10 seconds then disappear, and again only happens probably once a week (strangely when I am running low on fuel??) Only used 250ml of oil in over 3000 miles. Not a fix, but small inconvenience over high repair cost. ps: recommended to use 10/40 oil (slighty thicker) than the 0 or 5/30 recommended oil.
