Land Rover Freelander watr pump has gone

i think the water pump has gone,but the car wont start it just makes a whirring noise,what damage has occurred,any ideas cheers

suspect timing belf failure. if this is correct then valve to piston contact is probable. remove covers and inspect. most likely it will some bent valves, but first replace water pump and fit new timing belt kit and compression test. this will test engine and tell you if you need to remove the cylinder head. hope this helps
