Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
I have a noise, which sounds mechanical coming from my engine. It almost sounds like the tappets need replacing, it's a kind of tapping noise. However, it is intermittent. It tends to begin after I have accelerated hard, although this is not always the case. It has made the noise for anything between a few seconds and 50 miles before. It also has different levels of intesity. It normally sounds just like tappets, however it quite often sounds like I've rplaced my engine with a 15year old diesel engine. When it is most intense, the check engine light normally comes on, and will stay on for about 60miles. Also when the noise is most intense, there is a clear drop in power, and the gears change at a really high RPM (6000). I have taken this car to the garage, nothing showed up on the diagnostics, apart from a slight variation in voltage from the knock sensor, which the aparently traced to a bad connection, and then fixed. I don't even know what the knock sensor is!?!?! Anyway, any help would be appriciated. I'm guessing that as it is so intermittent, it must be electrical, not mechanical.

knock sensor does what it says on the tin it detects engine knock(noise/shock)it can then retard the timing to avoid engine damage.
in your case with such a rough running engine the check engine lamp prob comes on because the knock sensor says help excessive knock.so you can prob forget this as it cant cause knock only report on it.as for the cause of the poor running
the most common for a petrol car is coil packs or crank angle sensor both costly so id try a garage with a good diagnostic tech or a good home tune man.but car must play up to diagnose so to pay by the hour may cost.talk to local garage maybe they would use car for a day or 2 till prob shows saving u the hourly rate
