Hyundai Coupe brain in engine needs attention

Car: Hyundai Coupe
Variant: 1599CC
Model Year: 2001
I have a HYUNDAI COUPE 2001 1599CC,
took it to a mechanic and he told me that the brain had gone,
he told me that the brain would have to be sent to England to be reset
(I Live in Northern Ireland) I'm currently disabled and I don't know what to do,
the mechanic told me it would cost £1000, I don't have that amount of money,
I do not know anything about cars, could you please give me any help or advice.

get a second opinion from another mechanic. better to spend money on 1/2 hours diagnostic time in a main dealer than lay out all that money, what happens if 1st diagnoises is wrong

What is the actual problem with the car that makes the mechanic suggest it needs this part ?

Any decent independant garage / tuning centre can carry out a diagnostic scan to see what fault is .If confirmed it is ECU , contact http://www.bba-reman.com/uk/index.aspx for price which should be substanually cheaper than quoted .No need to go to main dealers where it will cost you an arm and a leg for the same work to be carried out / diagnosed , especially on a 9yr old car and under your circumstances .If can help further , get back to board .All the best .
