Honda Accord clutch slips/engine revs under acceleration

Car: Honda Accord
Variant: 2.2 CTDi manual
Model Year: 2007
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
6 speed manual gearbox. When I accelerate from around 1800 RPM it appears as if the clutch is slipping. The engine revs rise about 6-800 rpm then drop back and acceleration is equivalent, no speed increase and then when the revs drop back it accelerates, just as if I were feathering the clutch, or going on and off the gas. Obviously I am not "sitting" on the clutch, or pumping the gas. Any ideas what might cause this?
Many thanks.

Isn't that just the clutch slipping? ie on its way out.

It might well be, and this is my suspicion. I would expect the usual smell of burning clutch plates that normally goes with a slipping clutch. Thank you for your reply, I could not think what else might cause this and wanted to get a wider opinion.
Regards,
Tim
