Ford Puma accelerator clock revs up and engine makes noise, but car won't pick up speed

Car: Ford Puma
Model Year: 1998
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
Hi,

I bought a used manual Ford Puma 1.7 last year with a full service history. It has been running with no problems at all up until last week -
When I change gear from 2nd to 3rd or from 3rd to 4th and press down on the accelerator and try to speed up - the rmp clock shoots up but the car doesn't pick up speed and feels as if it's losing power- there is a whirring noise from the engine. It is especialy difficult to go uphill.
Then after a wgile everything is fine, before the problem arises again..
It has now 76,500 miles on the clock, and not had a cambelt change yet.
I realy don't know what the reason is, I would appreciate your comments / help.
Also what sort of costs am I looking at to fix the problem?

suspect faulty clutch. by going on what you described. relativly simple job about 3-4 hours.
but get it confirmed first!!! hope this helps!!

yes sounds like elannor says probably clutch but also check drive shafts if the noise is other than engine noise

My friend has a similar problem with her 1.4 puma only:
It loses power mainly at low revs ie setting off and after gear change but also on motorway in full flight.
The rev counter needle drops slightly when this occurs.
If it makes any difference shes had her engine changed a few months ago but all seemed well. The air con unit also hasnt worked since engine change, mechanic said it needs repressurising? Plus the heaters dont get warm and all the fuses are fine.
