Ford Puma juddering on acceleration - deep noise and burning smell

Car: Ford Puma
Variant: 1.7 variable timing
Model Year: 2000
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
My puma has just started juddering on acceleration, theres a deep noise that goes with it, and a smell - like burning. I'm wondering if this is exhaust related, the clutch was replaced 5 months ago and fine. The engine light is flashing on the dashboard......any ideas before the local mechanic gets a call?

if engine light has been on or is on a code will be registered in ecu local mech will read code and prob find fault, sounds like judder caused by missfire could be coil or leads burning smell noise prob cat broken down new reqd.nxt time dont drive with lamp on or judder save cat
