Ford Puma sever power loss at over 4000rpm

Car: Ford Puma
Variant: 1.7 16v
Model Year: 2000

i recently bought a puma. when it accelerates over 4000 rpm the power drops right off. doesnt go completely, if i keep accelerating it will keep pulling, just very slowly.

any help would be greatly appreciated. hope this isnt a big job :s

i should also say that its on an R plate, if this helps at all?

Unless you know it`s been done, i`d start by renewing the fuel filter.
Also check spark plugs and air filter.
