Ford Mondeo knocking and deadness in steering wheel only when wheels straight

Car: Ford Mondeo
Variant: 2.0 TDDi
Model Year: 2002
Categories: Steering, Suspension, Brakes, Wheels & Tyres
When my car runs from a straight position on steering wheel there is a 2 inch gap in either direction from straight where there appears to be a knocking sound but also a little locking of the wheel then it passes after this. Any where else in the radius of movement there is no problem at all. and the problem does not appear to be there on reversing also.
Any ideas gladly welcomed.

Check steering column intermediate shaft / joint .

you could try looking at the suspension top mounts whilst someone turns the steering to see if it clunks from there (put your hand on them to feel)or look up under the wheel arches
