Ford Mondeo engine cut out following some jerky power

Car: Ford Mondeo
Variant: 2.0 TDDi
Model Year: 2002
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
Whilst driving my car home last night, I experienced some jerky power coming from the engine. It would go then slow up, then go O.k then slow up, this went on for approx 1 mile. As I approached a junction, I slowed right down and the car stalled. I started it again with a load of Blue smoke pouring out of the exhaust. It managed to drive only 500 yards after that before it died altogether. Now it wont start. The engine turns over but wont fire up.
Wondering if this is common or not. I think it is a fuel problem personally, but having very little experience of Diesel engines, am unsure if there maybe something more sinister I'm missing?? Help please
