Ford Mondeo fuel pump issue

Car: Ford Mondeo
Variant: 1.8 duratec he - petrol
Model Year: 2004
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
Hi All

I've changed fuel pump( the one inside tank) two weeks ago and is down again. What can cause it? When it was changed the fuel filter was also done as a matter of course.
the pump is working fine at idle, but under load it is unable to perform to the pressure required.
it has had 2 second hand fuel pumps fitted and both time the pumps ran great for a few days then gradually failed.
Now the car will run fine at idle and cut out every 2 or 3 miles, tuen it off, start it again and away it will go?
i dont want to go and buy a brand new pump incase there is an underlying fault which will bur it out aswell.

any advice guys - all will b much appreciated,
stu.

just a quick update,

i checked the voltage across the pump at idle.
was reading 12.78 across

checking the wires individually, positive (green and red wire) to earth read 12.78 - 13.86

negative (black) to earth showed 2.8 - 3.6

i am assuming that 12 volts into the pump with the engine running and less than 4 out indicates a faulty pump but again anyone any ideas what is burning them out?

surely 3 pumps isnt just bad luck?

the reading black to earth should be nearer to 0 volts . the 2.8v and above is the amount of volt drop in that wire so check for a poor earth connection, however this shouldn,t burn the pump out
