Ford Mondeo starting in morning (choke)

Car: Ford Mondeo
Variant: 2ltr Duratec Petrol
Model Year: 2003
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
The car runs perfectly and has only done 48000 miles but with 1 problem which has only appeared in the last week and that is:
When the car has been left over night outside it starts ok but I have to keep my foot on the pedal and run it at 1200 revs otherwise the revs drop and it cuts out.
Once restarted (No problem) with foot on pedal for about 20 seconds take foot off pedal and it cuts out. (Seems like the choke doesn't come in opperation).
Leave car for say 5 minutes and then restart engine and the choke comes into opperation and runs normaly at about 1200 revs. Drive away and car runs perfectly as it should.
Any ideas would be welcome.
Thank you

Could be engine coolant temperature sensor which sends info to ECU , i.e more fuel needed on cold start , just like old choke .

Spot on Whittingehame.
You saved me I rekon over £200 because the garage said that they had never heard of this problem before and would need to do a Dynostic test which would cost £86 plus parts plus labour.
Thank you
