This does sound like that your steering rack had packed up. I had the same problem last month and coincidently I have exactly the same car as yours i.e. Ford Mondeo tdci ghia but it is a 54 reg (2004). I was told that the problem actual occurs with oil seals in the steering rack, which starts leaking. It is cheaper to replace the whole rack rather than fixing the seals. Luckily I found a specialist place in Charlton and they were really good and economical. Let me know if you want their details?
