I have a Ford Mondeo 2.0 TDCi (130 bhp) Diesel. It is a 54 reg (2004). I have had this car for over 6 months now and I mostly drive round the town. I used to get a decent mpg of around 33/34 but in last couple of months, my mpg had hit rock bottom. I am currently only getting around 26 mpg. I know that it is a slightly older car and I only drive in urban area (Ford's website suggests an urban mpg of 35.3 for my car) but I should still be getting around 32 mpg. Has anyone else has experienced the silimar sort of problem. Please do advise, I would really appreciate it.

In the colder weather it takes longer for the engine to reach operating temp , especially if short journeys , therby using more fuel .If for instance the thermostat was jammed in open position ,and the engine running cooler , this wouldn't help either .Could also check basics i.e air filter .

Hi whittingehame !
I had my neighbour (who is a mechanic) to look into it and he has so far found the follwoing:
- The fan comes on when you start the engine and stays on constantly when it shouldn't do as the engine is cold.
- The air filter was dirty and clogged up.
- The car is giving a lot of thick black smoke when rev (he suggests the diesel is not getting burnt up and going straight to exhaust)
- Some leakage was found on a pipe next to the engine.
Any further suggestions?
Cheers,
