Ford Mondeo miss firing

Car: Ford Mondeo
Variant: 2.0 ghia X
Model Year: 2001
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
Engine is misfiring, any time of day or weather, wet, cold or hot. Seems to be intermittent, but on occassions miss fires badly, for example earleir this week went to Dudley and thought w emight not make it. But on our return, miss fire totally disappears when speed is in excess of 60mph.

This symptom has happened twice before and having fitted a new, what used to be called the distributor cap, symptom disappears, what is wrong with the thing. Is it a fuel problem or what?. Engine managment light is now lit.
