Ford Mondeo engine overheating

Car: Ford Mondeo
Variant: 2.0 TDDI zetec saloon
Model Year: 2002
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
after running the car for approx 15-20 mins the car engine temp rises from 'normal' to high and then loses power. this is alarming, water levels are good, there is no heat coming into the car interior through the vents, is this an indication of water pump/circulation problems?

Could check thermostat , rad not blocked etc .etc. but might be head gasket gone . A sniff test will verify if this is the fault .
