Check if rev counter moves when cranking , if not could be crank sensor / wiring . Check if you can hear fuel pump buzz for a few seconds when switching ignition on . Try spraying easy start into intake and if runs then fuel problem . If so check / change fuel filter

I had/have a similar problem with my 2002 Rover 45, sometimes failing to start with the engine cranking nicely (so no battery problems fortunately).
In my case after waiting a few minutes the engine would start normally.
The only thing I found is that it happened when the tank was (almost) empty, when filled it went away. This doesn’t explain the problem but at least it solves the problem.

^ Above post . Shouldn't make any difference if fuel pump is operating as suggested . By switching it on and off a few times by trying you probably primed the fuel system which should not be required unless weak fuel pump or drawing air

F27 15 Fuel Pump Relay, Windscreen Heater
Hope that's all it is , but if it fails you dont usually hear fuel pump when switching ignition on
