Ford Mondeo crank sensor keeps getting smashed

Car: Ford Mondeo
Variant: 1.8 verona
Model Year: 1998
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
Hi, im new to the site and so will just jump straight in.
What should i look for, or what can cause my Crank Sensors to keep being smashed.
There was a faint tapping noise in the engine that lasted 2-3 days before the 1st Sensor got broken, just a small piece missing from the end!
Then 2 weeks later there was no warning and my car just died again, upon inspection the new Crank Sensor was smashed in half !!
Since then ive fitted another new one to get me home. Ive checked this one but no damage is visable.
Can any one please explain or give me ideas whats wrong with my car?

GO A LONG WITH "MASTERTECH" AND HIS FLY WHEEL IDEA, CERTAINALLY SOUNDS AS THOUGH THE FLY WHEEL IS MAKING CONTACT WITH THE SENSOR.

Your diff has broken up inside the g/box and the noise you heard was the debris be thrown around the bell housing, Thus causing to break the end of your crankshaft sensor, Seen these do this loads of times before. You will more than likely need a new gearbox.

check that your crank is not moving,i have come across a couple of mondeos and focus where the crank moves side to side and so damages the sensor,
