Ford Mondeo knock on steering

Car: Ford Mondeo
Variant: 2.o estate
Model Year: 2001
Categories: Leaks & Noises
just brought the car but noticed that steering makes knocking sound on passenger side when steering turned even just a bit. Nothing obvious visible and no leaks on power steer assembly. Any thoughts?

if its really black when you dot it on white paper its overheated, which leads to the rack braking up

I had a problem like this on a ford and in the end I traced it to a universal joint on the steering colum shaft, if its the same sort of design theres one on the inside the bulk head and one that attaches to the steering rack (2 in all).I first changed the outer one only it find it was the one behind the bulkhead a pain to get to as I had to take the steering off(but it was not a hard job)hope this helps.
