Ford Mondeo intermittent speedo

Car: Ford Mondeo
Variant: 1.8 estate
Model Year: 2003
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
I hope someone can give a bit of advice. The speedo has gone intermittent for some obscure reason. It will usually register for around 1 mile and then drop to zero. Stopping the engine, switching everything off and then restarting sometimes cures the problem but only for another mile! The speed sensor has been replaced and the connector plug cleaned but no improvement. I am now suspicious of either the instrument cluster or the ECU or both. ANY advice or further clues would be gratefully received.
Thanks in advance.

remove the cluster and make sure the plug is secure on the bulk head if no signs of damage suspect i.c

Thanks for that. Removal of the cluster was my next intended step and I made an attempt yesterday but ran out of time. One thing I did notice was that the back of the dash in general was quite damp probably as a result of the past cold weather and the fact that the car hadn't been used for some time.
From your comment I take it that the 'ic' is the integrated curciut (board) on which all the various dials are mounted. I will check, as best as I can, for loose connections and any obvious damage. Would a light squirt of WD40 be of any use? I am aware that this product can damage some types of plastic but thought I would ask anyway. Thanks.
