Ford Mondeo engine dies when changing down gear and reversing.

Car: Ford Mondeo
Variant: 2.0 Zetec manual mk2
Model Year: 2000
Categories: Gearbox & Clutch
Hi there.
Last night when driving down a hill i gear changed down and when the clutch engaged the engine died. It started without a problem however the engine died again when engaging clutch on changing down gear (there seems to be no problem driving up the gear range though).I did notice when the clutch engaged there was a noise like a clanking sound (metal against metal or a misfire in the exhaust. The car now also has problems reversing. When reversing from standing as soon as i engage the clutch the engine nearly dies. Any suggestions about the possible cause will be very much appreciated. Many thanks.

May be more than one fault .Cutting out / stallinf could be the idle air control valve needing cleaned or replaced . The noise could be the exhaust , mountings or heatshield .

Go for simple and cheap stuff 1st. i would check engine/gearbox earths are tight or could be that a air/fuel actuator or sensor readings out of sync so try disconnecting battery terminals for 5mins to reset. see how that goes but may need diagnostic. hope this helps you out

Hi there,

Many thanks for the replies.

Got myself a reasonably price scanner and it brought up these pending codes:

P0351 & P0352.

I believe they refer to the coil pack. Is it easy to replace? Is it worth getting some new HT leads and plugs?

Many regards.
