Ford Mondeo drilling noise when trying to start.

Car: Ford Mondeo
Variant: 2.o tddi
Model Year: 2001
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
My car wouldn't start a couple of months ago. I was told it was the starter motor so had that replaced. Went ok but yesterday decided it wouldn't start again. When i had the starter done, the mechanic told me the flywheel was the problem and it could stop at anytime and that it would be a big job £300 +.
I know that this problem can lead to the clutch going, so i just need advice on what would be the cheapest way of sorting this problem out. Could i have just the flywheel replaced ? - is it a solid or dual mass on this year of car ? Would it be better to pay for a flywheel and clutch kit and get the whole job done. It is all starting to confuse me a little so anyone with good advice or if you have had the same problem as i know it is common in these cars, look forward to your replies.

Your starter ring gear has worn by the sound of it which is what the starter motor engages onto in order to crank the engine over, this will require the gearbox out to replace it and if it needs a clutch it would be best to replace it at the same time.
