Ford KA thermostat light goes on car shudders, light off car's fine

Car: Ford KA
Model Year: 1996
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
Hi All,

Got a bizarre problem. I can be driving along quite happily when the thermostat light goes on. The car shudders (feels like I instantly lose power and the car's trying to brake). This lasts for about a second. then the light goes off and the car's fine. This will happen every couple of minutes or so.

Oddly though, it can also happen to a cold engine when I just pull away first thing in the morning. Just so you know, I've stopped using the car for now so I don't do any more damage to it.

Any ideas?

If no sign of overheating / coolant loss , might just be faulty engine temp coolant sensor .
