Ford KA steering column grinding

Car: Ford KA
Model Year: 1996
Categories: Steering, Suspension, Brakes, Wheels & Tyres
My daughter has an old Ka which does have power steering but yesterday the steering column began to make a grinding noise as she turns the wheel. The steering also feels "heavy".
Can anyone please advise what this might be and any solutions gratefully recieved.
Thank you.
