Ford KA engine light on

Car: Ford KA
Model Year: 2002
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
Hello,
I really hope someone can help me! I have bought a new car and waiting for it to be delivered, and have arranged for my Ford Ka to go in on a swappage deal by the end of the week.
However today the engine light has come on in my Ford Ka, and she makes spluttering and struggling noises when going slow. I really dont want to have to take her to the garage since she will probably being scrapped next week. I dont know if it could be the water levels, and dont know how to check that.
Any advice or suggestions would be very appreciated!
Thanks,
Leigh.

the only way to see why the engine light came on is to read the codes ,most garages have code readers and not many charge just to read them, this should tell you why its running badly

Check plastic header tank , water level marked on outside .If low / empty wait till engine cold and remove cap to fill to correct level .
