knocking sound when take foot off accelerator

Leaks & Noises
The other evening when turning left there was a slight thud from front of car and ever since when taking my foot off accelerator there is a sound that is a sort of rhythmic knocking sound (a bit like a roller coaster when it’s being pulled on the chains up to top of slope before it zooms down). There is no sound when accelerating. Car drives as normal.
Mechanic said it needs a new gearbox but the car doesn’t seem to have any issues with gears.
Wondering if anyone else has experienced a similar problem or has any ideas?
Thanks.

If it's a heavy " clicking " noise that you get especially on full lock it's a driveshaft CV (constant velocity ) joint . Could also check engine / transmission mountings

A heavy clicking is probably a better description of the noise. It’s not on full lock though, just normal straight driving when I’m not pressing down on the accelerator.

It usually gets worse on full lock but if worn driveshaft / joint you get it also as you describe , Get a second opinion from someone else . If driveshaft , not a big job
