Ford KA repair bill of £1500

Car: Ford KA
Variant: 1.3
Model Year: 2007
Categories: Leaks & Noises
I took my car to a Ford garage because the steering seemed unusually heavy. I've been told:
The entire steering column needs replacing
The air con is leaking (which is dangerous)
There is a leak in the clutch fluid
Both rear tyres have perished and need replacing

We have been quoted £1500 to put all this right. Is this about what you would expect? Is there any point getting a second opinion from somewhere else (I'm new to the area and don't know any local garages) or should I just scrap the car?

If your car does not have power steering there is a universal joint that fails / becomes partially seized and makes steering tight . Not a big or expensive job to replace .Both rear tyres you could get yourself from any tyre centre after comparing prices .Depends what is leaking on clutch , whether it is master cyl or concentric release bearing .You might save quite a bit getting an independant garage to check and estimate cost of neccessary repairs as main dealers are usually very high in comparison .Always better to get a second opinion .
