Ford Galaxy can't put in the gear

Car: Ford Galaxy
Variant: 1.9 tdi 6 speed manual
Model Year: 2003
Week ago I was driving through the town, stopped at red traffic light. When the light turned to green wanted to start drive but...nothing. While engine was running I couldn't put in any gear, it was making cracking metal noises( while engine running and moving gear knob).
I did experiment. Switched off the engine, put in a gear ( I thought so) than started the engine. Car didn't move at all and this cracking metal noise was coming out from somewhere.
What it could be?

If this was a week ago is the car still off the road ? Was the clutch pedal normal ? Could be the DMF or clutch assembly on its way out .

As per previous solution and check c.v. Joint has not collapsed or drive shaft broken as the metal is poor.
