May well be bearings gone on drive belt tensioner .Another point worth mentioning , has timing belt been renewed yet ?

i looked at the engine yesterday and there was a bolt loose on the water pump pully that luckily came out when i lifted the bonnet, tightened them up and seems to have done the trick. What would of caused that?

Good to hear you found fault . Unusual for bolt to loosen .Possibly been off at one time and just nipped up / not fully tightened before you owned car ?
