Ford Focus intermitant starting with foul smelling smoke

Car: Ford Focus
Variant: TD
Model Year: 1999
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
About once a fortnight the car will not start, the engine is turning over but wont fire, all the time a foul smelling thick white smoke is present. Leave the car for 10 - 15 mins and it fires up no problem. It will happen again then fine for a couple of weeks.
Any suggestions?

It's certainly not weather dependent.
