Ford Focus fan speed & aircon problem

Car: Ford Focus
Variant: 1.6LX Estate
Model Year: 2001
Categories: Leaks & Noises
With the fan speed set to 1, the aircon light comes on but the fan does not blow.

With the fan speed set to 2 or higher the aircon light goes out ( and there is no noticeable load on the engine from the aircon pump) but the fans start blowing and the speed varies depending on the speed position, set it back to 1 and the fan stops and the aircon light comes back on .

The airflow direction setting is not set to screen only, it happens in any of the other positions.

Any ideas?????

Well I fixed this one, it was the old favourite of teh fan speed resistor behind the glove box. Not sure why this was also stopping the aircon working on speeds 2 - 4 but a replacement resistor off ebay and all is well now.
