Turn key before starting car thermostat goes to maximum and get warning engine too hot.

Can be caused by a faulty engine coolant temperature sensor and / or cylinder head coolant temp sensor .

Thanks for that. The onset of the problem was sudden. It also struck me as weird that I would get engine overheating warnings before I turned on the engine. Well it's off to the garage I guess.

If it's just a sender / sensor , usually just a minor job . Had the rare , odd one where it was just the wiring connector on sensor
