Ford Focus engine requires two operations of start button

Car: Ford Focus
Variant: 1.8 auto
Model Year: 2003
Categories: Electrics, ECU, Warnings & Lights
following a battery change the start button on 1st press it lights ignition system and dash lights only. On 2nd press engine starts well.
should all happen with one press

Tried foot on brake pedal or clutch pedal before pushing the button ?

yes have foot hard on brake pedal, its an automatic

Long shot but check brake lights are working ok as it will confirm switch operating .

Brake lights work as does keeping foot on pedal for second application of start button
Key should not need reprogrammed as it opens doors and allows operation of start button
It’s just the need to double push the start button that is weird
