First thing I would check / replace would be the speed sensor , but if not that may be instrument cluster fault also .

You could get a "Global scan" done,
This scans all the modules,
of which the instrument cluster is one of many,
And they all depend on interconnectivity for correct function.
If the speedo chip or connection at the back is faulty it "could" give rise to running/starting faults.
The scan will tell if there are any faults in the modules.

A how to video to replace the speed sensor of the 2002 Ford Focus and Fiesta's. Symptoms experienced are speedometer dropping out, loss of engine power and drop in voltage across electronics in the car.

Common parts that break during this is the metal pin (with the flat tab snapping during removal) and also sometimes the sensor itself snapping in half leaving the lower part remaining within the transmission housing.

All the work was done from the top of the engine. Slow and methodical in practice ensures that any breakage or losing loose parts on the floor or into the gearbox.
