Ford Focus idling fast once journey is in progress

Car: Ford Focus
Variant: 1.8 Diesel Estate
Model Year: 2000
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
When car is started,idling is o.k.at 800rpm.
Once journey has commenced & gear changes have been made & car has to stop at traffic lights, junctions, etc, revs can be anything between 1100 &1500 rpm. This can be fixed by switching ignition on & off but returns when journey is resumed.Clutch switch, mounted behind pedal, seems o.k. when checked with continuity meter.
This used to be an intermittent problem but now seems permanent.

Our focus diesel has done that a few Times but we usually have issues with a lumpy idle.

Diesels can rev higher if there is air in the fuel. Check the leakoff pipes they get stiff and crack leaking diesel and air enters the return line and goes in to the filter. Then in turn it draws the air into the main system. Also check on the top of the filter. These new rioters have the return in the top of the filter and the connection is quite poor in my opinion and I have seen many leak. Its the one with a clip that looks like a mouse,s head
