Ford Focus stalling when slowing - progressive, intermittent, now will not drive

Car: Ford Focus
Variant: Titanium Diesel Auto
Model Year: 2006
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
Oh my, where to start... Note fully service history at Ford dealer, well taken care of. About 8 weeks ago car began to shudder when slowing at traffic lights, roundabouts etc. This progressed to stalling. Once went to safety mode only (could not rev past 3,000rpm) Took to Ford garage by which time kangarooing badly who said was fuel filter. £149 later car seemed better but still occasionally shuddered and coughed when slowing, but not all the time. At speed drove like a dream. Couple of weeks later, during my daily 27 mile journey the kangarooing got bad, it stalled once, re=started ok but stalled again at traffic lights on a bypass road. This time, I could get car in D but as soon as I tried to accelerate it would stall. Had to call breakdown who suggested a transmission problem. Transported to my Ford dealer who after 2 days told me to collect it. Nothing wrong with it they said. Bearing in mind it had been undrivable I was taken back. Begged them to keep it longer and try slow speeds, lots of stopping. Still they could not find a problem and computer showed no issues. I collected it and sure enough, it seemed fine. We thought maybe a blocked jet following a dirty filter and change may be the cause. However, last week the problem started again. Just a cough here and there to start with, always when slowing. Just got it home today after a bad go of kangarooing and now I can start it but it will not even go into drive (D) without stalling. Also can here some strange whine when trying which is telling me I have a serious problem. I have to call breakdown again, I am scared to death now of my garage not finding anything wrong again, if they do its going to cost me an awful lot of money :( ... Cannot call breakdown until tomorrow but really wondered if anyone else has had this or knows of this? Cannot find anything on an older Titanium only 2013 model... no idea what to say to the 'mechanic' at my dealership... any comforting words or otherwise would be welcome, this is a horrible problem, I am an older person who used to be able to fix a lot of stuff on her own car! These days mechanical logic just does not apply!

you said it seemed better after fuel filter change sounds like there could be an air leak i assume when filter was changed that there was no metal particals found in old filter pointing to a fuel pump fault i think you have an air leak at filter housing and may need replaceing

My grateful thanks to poster of the suggested problem. I would have loved for it to have been that but my dealer have advised me I need a new gearbox and it is going to cost me a shocking £2,900.

I have not told them to go ahead yet as they have not actually told me what has gone wrong, just said there is a problem in the gearbox and the only solution is to replace it so I have asked for the detail.

Seriously, am I wrong to be so totally shocked and outraged that a 2006 reg car which has been well looked after, regularly serviced and one careful owner/driver, less than 70k on the clock needs a new auto gearbox?

I really do not know what to do. Is it worth it? Should I just trade it in or sell it to someone who would be able to work on it themselves and buy another car? I cannot afford a new car at all, cannot even really afford the 3k repair cost in all honesty, just sunk all my money into my house :( ... this could not have happened at a worse time.

The guy at the Ford dealership has quietly suggested it may not be worth doing but guys, my car is IMMACULATE, (could have easily sold on for 5k, maybe more before this)is he trying to tell me something? I hear whispers about CVT (is that right) My car is a CVT, this seems to be an issue. Ford do not fit them any more. Because they were trouble. But Ford will not talk to anyone as luckless as me who has bought an expensive special edition that has failed in its teenage years from a faulty manufacture....

...Sigh, I am offered 12 months warranty on a new gearbox. If this gearbox is as problematic as I am starting to suspect, 30k miles later I could be in the same boat. I have asked for a negotiation on this cost as I am a loyal customer of many years of Ford. Will find out Monday what they will bring to the table.

Another ramble, sorry all, but I really need some help, do I bite the bullet and pay 3k for a replacement gearbox? Do I trade it in and buy another Ford as the dealer is trying to suggest I do, or do I try and sell it as is to someone out there as a project?
