Ford Fiesta clutch/gear issues

I have a 2003 Ford Fiesta Zetec with slight clutch/gear issues. First of all, I struggle to put the car into first gear sometimes. This is only intermittent though, occasionally it doesn't slide smoothly into 1st, on the 2nd or 3rd attempt, it goes straight in. This also happens intermittently putting it into reverse gear but no other gear. I have had a brief look online and as I understand it, the reverse gear IS the first gear, just spinning the other way.
Also, the clutch pedal becomes very hard if I don't use the clutch. For example if I spend 30 mins on a motorway in 5th gear, when I turn off and change down, the clutch is quite stiff. If I spend the same amount of time driving around town, where I am constantly changing gear, I don't experience this problem and the clutch feels fine to depress every time. Only goes hard when I stay in one gear for a while. I only have partial service history on the car, the mileage has just hit 100,000, not sure if clutch or anything related has ever been replaced. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

i would check clutch hydraulics and bleed out in first instance if no fault found it sounds like clutch fault so gearbox will have to come out to investigate sure a new clutch assembly will sort out your problem but also make sure a new concentric slave cylinder is fitted at same time

As above reply plus ,that era of Fiestas also suffered from clutch drag affecting 1st and reverse caused by centre plate sticking and not sliding on spigot shaft splines correctly .But as "Roverman " suggests , looks like box out .
