Ford Escort car not starting up

Car: Ford Escort
Variant: XR3I 1.8 16V
Model Year: 1993
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
we was going down a duel carrage way and i went to change up a gear to over take on the outside lane when the car decided to start loosing power then the power came back and then cut out again. we managed to get it to the road side where it decided not to start again. we got it towed to a friends house close by. as the car broke down it felt like it had run out of fuel. so we put more in and still no change, there is no sparks from the spark plugs so i changed the coil and still no sparks??? we then changed the unit on the battery side of the car that joins the coil pack but still no joy. :( please can anyone help on this matter?????

what kind of noise are you getting from the starter....if its a whirling noise then you could have a snapped cam belt

it all sounds fine its just not catching. its not long had a new cam belt, we went back to the car this morning and tried to start it it it did catch and started for just over a second then stoped again. we even tested if there was enough life in the battery and the battery is fine too.??? by the way thank you for your responce. :)

have you checked the solanoid on the carb

sorry mate forgot you dont have a carb......it could be a problem with fuel pump i.e. intermittent power loss to pump you could try a direct feed to the pump and if it works then put a switch on it
