Ford Escort highpitched whine from engine

Car: Ford Escort
Variant: 1.6 Finesse estate
Model Year: 1999
Categories: Leaks & Noises
I have recently bought a Ford Escort Finesse (estate model). It is a V-reg, 38k miles on the clock and I paid £500. For the price I paid I am not hoping to own this car for years and years but rather as a cheap run-around during the credit crunch.

I have previously owned an escort finesse but a saloon version. My new estate finesse makes a completely different noise when driving: more high pitched and whiny.

It doesn't sound "in pain" or like it is struggling, just a little bit whiny. My friend says it sounds like a problem with the gearbox. Should I be worried? Or do all estate versions sound more whiny?

should sound same ;start engine does it wine?
does it stop when put foot on clutch?
if noise when foot on clutch =clutch bearing, replace
if noisy foot off =gearbox bearings'live with it may go on 4-ever or buy exchange box.

After starting the engine and letting it idle, it sounds normal. The higher pitch of noise really occurs when accelerating especially at higher revs in lower gears. When depressing the clutch the pitch decreases.

It isnt a whine as such, more a higher pitch of engine noise than I would expect from a 1.6 zetec and higher than I remember my old saloon version of the escort finesse sounding.
