Ford Cougar excessive smoke coming from exhaust and over reving

Car: Ford Cougar
Variant: 2.5 v6 24v manual
Model Year: 1999
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
Hi i bought a car about 2 months back, however it has started to get very smoky from the exhaust. Then today it has be slightly over reving and giving the feeling it is going to stall :-/
We have checked the oil and water, this seems to be clean,as first thought was head gasket.
Could it be the fact im not using the car very often (once every other day to drive 1 mile to my daughters school) and the fact its so cold and wet, i know how fords love the british weather!
Any ideas anyone?

Using the car so little and driving that short distance means the engine will never get to correct working temp and will be running on a rich setting most of the time .Car needs a good run to clear and dry out engine / exhaust , clear plugs etc .Thats provided there are no cooling system leaks , signs of overheating and oil is o.k
