Fiat Punto noise whilst in 1st, 2nd & 3rd

Car: Fiat Punto
Variant: 1.2
Model Year: 2000
Categories: Leaks & Noises
Hi, i have just bought a 2000 Fiat Punto and it seems to be making a grinding/rubbing noise when in 1st, 2nd and sometimes 3rd. i have no problems with the gears and the clutch and it doesn't always make the noise, the car drives perfectly fine and doesn't seem to have any other problems. I have just taken it back due to a leak from the drive shaft which has been fixed, i thought this was the problems but its still happening, any ideas??

Thanks!!

could be related to the gearbox oil leak,if the oil ran really low you would have caused some damage to box,if you press clutch down does the noise go,could even be a worn release bearing

First thing to do would be check g/box oil level .May be bearings in box noisy .

It doesn't make a noise whilst the clutch is pressed just afterwards. i can't get round to adding more oil until the weekend as its too dark once i finish work, do you think it will be ok to drive till then or will it make the matter worse???

Thanks!

If it is due to lack of oil in gear box it wont do it any good running it. It could be something like layshaft bearings noisy . Even if you could run it into any fast fit centre and get them to check it out , would eliminate / confirm that possible cause .Again , without hearing it , just a guess to noise .

Your welcome , if needing any further help / advice , get back to forum .If the leak was from gearbox driveshaft oil seal or they had shaft out , you would think they would have checked and topped up oil level to replace lost oil ?

i'd have thought so too, but we checked and it doesn't look like it's been messed with so will give it a shot. to be honset i don't think he was all too pleased with me sending the car back but if there's a problem the same day i bought it the least he can do is fix it am i right? anyway ill be giving the oil thing a go **fingers crossed** and see what happens.

Hi, just thought id post to let you all know my dad took my car apart the weekend and we found that the bearing had collapsed which was causing the noise but also the seal had gone. This has resulted in me purchasing a new gear box :-( The most annoyig part is when i sent the car back to the person i purchased it off i looks like he didnt actually do anything just wiped down the engine to make it look like the leak had stopped, no wonder people are very coursious of second hand car dealers cause i know i will be extra weary of them from now on!!
